Walking
Tuckenhay is the starting point for many different walks
on which Mike can provide written guides. All are recognised
locally as being varied and interesting while requiring different
levels of stamina. All involve hills of differing gradients.
Bird watching
The creek is a bird watcher’s dream venue featuring
many migratory species and a boat trip which takes in the
various inlets is a must, as is watching the many wading birds
at low tide.
Further afield is the wide-open moorland and the beaches
of South Devon.
Boat trips
Barry can accompany you on trips along Bow Creek in an eight-seat
boat equipped with a 16-horsepower outboard engine. Life jackets
are provided but this is a boat which is widely considered
to be extremely safe.
A visit by water across to Duncannon Point and then a trip
by ferry to Agatha Christie’s estate, Greenways, followed
by the crossing to Dittisham for lunch in the local riverside
pub can be arranged, subject to tide times.
Canoe classes
Canoe classes or trips can be organised from the quay in
Tuckenhay. Again, all equipment is provided and qualified
instructors are involved.
Gastronomy
Both public houses in the village serve excellent cuisine
at affordable prices and during the summer months there is
often entertainment – whether steel band, pianist, or
BBQ – at The Maltsters.
The surrounding villages and Totnes also have a selection
of eateries to which Mike will gladly point you, depending
on your taste.
Shopping
Market day in Totnes is a bohemian affair (Friday and Saturday
mornings) as it plays host to many local craftspeople –
artists, woodcarvers and bric-a-brac sellers. The town also
has a variety of interesting shops and galleries.
Beaches
Within a 20-minute drive you will find several of South Devon’s
glorious, open beaches.
Golf
Seven golf courses are located nearby including Thurlestone,
Bigbury, Churston and Dartmouth Country Club.
