Totnes is the major town where you will
find a variety of shops, both independents and supermarkets,
for all your needs.
Nearer at hand are the picturesque villages of Dittisham
just a mile or so down river, Cornworthy
and Ashprington with its nearby Sharpham
Winery, producing quality English wines and delectable
cheeses from Jersey cows’ milk. The Dartington Craft
Centre and the market town of Kingsbridge
are also within a 20-minute drive.
Only five miles away by the valley road is Dartmouth,
with its flotillas of boats of all sizes bobbing in the estuary,
its magnificent Royal Naval College and its shops and restaurants.
A few miles further on is Salcombe and then
onward to the famous Burgh Island which is
approached from the mainland in a peculiar sea tractor with
wheels on stilts, allowing you to remain above the level of
the sea. On the island is the splendid, Grade II listed, art-deco
Burgh Island Hotel where Agatha Christie wrote ‘Evil
Under the Sun’ and ‘And Then There Were None’.
Refreshment is also available in the tiny 14th century smugglers’
pub, The Pilchard Inn.
The whole of the South Hams region is a conservation area
with many features of natural beauty so you are never far
from something or somewhere to explore and enjoy.
